Network Troubleshooting
Contributor: Crunch
From time to time users may experience networking problems, which may induce laggy gameplay, frequent disconnections, or no connectivity at all. There are a few things you can do on your end that usually will solve any problems you may have. There are some problems that don't lie on your end, and those problems cannot be solved by you.
Home networks that involve multiple computers include a modem which is provided to you by your ISP, and a switch/router used to "split" the connection between multiple hosts (computers / xboxes / ps3s, etc..) The first thing you want to check when you're having connectivity problems is whether one of those hosts are hogging bandwidth. Make sure you stop large downloads or file transfers if you are experiencing a bad connection. If you're using a wireless AP, make sure you have it secured with an encrypted password (WEP is the most widely used choice) to avoid neighbors freeloading off your connection.
Common utilities used to help identify the problem include ping, tracert, ipconfig, and netstat. The way to use these utilities is to open up your start menu, click run, type "CMD" (without quotes) into the dialogue box, and click okay. An MSDOS window (black command line screen) will pop up.
The first step, that usually will fix your problem is to release and renew your IP address (assuming you don't have a static IP.) You can do this by typing "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew". This can also be accomplished by right clicking your connection in the taskbar, and clicking repair.
If renewing your IP doesn't help, the next step is to ping the server, which in this case is RW, to test connectivity between your network and the server. Type "ping uo.rwuo2.com" and press enter.
If you have connectivity and your ping is higher than normal, the next step is to trace your route to the server to see if any networks you hit on the way to the server are overloaded with traffic. To do this type "tracert uo.rwuo2.com". If you are getting high pings on hops throughout your route, there is nothing you can do except wait until that particular hop isn't as overloaded.
You can also type "netstat" into your command prompt to see how many connections are currently open on your computer. This will help identify any mal-ware that is hogging your bandwidth. In this case just run your spyware utilities.
If you're still having problems on your end of the network, a common procedure that might fix it is toshut down your computers, unplug your modem/router-switch for at least 30 seconds, then plug them back in and turn your computers back on. This should allow enough time for the router-switch to erase its routing/MAC-address tables, and it will rebuild them upon plugging them back in.
